Yoshiwara, once a pleasure quarter, was the birthplace of various cultures, including the horse meat eating culture, and has been called the “cradle of culture". There were more than 20 stores selling sakura-nabe, and as one of the few local dishes in Tokyo, it was eaten both morning and night by the stylish customers on their way to and from the Yoshiwara brothels. In 1905, Nakae became one of these restaurants. It is said that Nakae was crowded all day long with customers on their way home from the brothels in the morning, for lunch, in the evening to fill up before going out to the brothels, and late at night for an evening meal on their way home from the brothels. Since then, Nakae has been in business for nearly 120 years, and is now the only remaining restaurant in Yoshiwara. The 100-year-old store has been designated as a registered tangible cultural property and still welcomes customers as an active store.
