* Khanom Jeen Sao Nam: This dish stands out as a true culinary rarity! A truly hard-to-find ancient recipe executed perfectly here. The thin rice noodles are served in a rich, flavorful sauce with grated pineapple, minced fish balls, chili, ginger, and lime, offering a balanced taste of sweet, sour, salty, and spicy.
* Yum Som-O (Pomelo Salad): The juicy pomelo segments are tossed with a tangy dressing and your choice of ingredients, often topped with crispy fried shallots, delivering a refreshing and harmonious blend of flavors.
* Pla Duk Fu Pad Prik Khing (Crispy Catfish Flakes Stir-fried with Red Curry Paste): A classic done right. The aromatic red curry paste is intensely flavored, stir-fried with crispy catfish flakes and yard-long beans, making it a perfect complement to steamed rice.

The restaurant has recently undergone a beautiful renovation, resulting in a clean yet still wonderfully classic interior that evokes the royal court style of Thai dining. Crucially, the tradition of live musicians remains, performing beautiful, nostalgic songs during both lunch and dinner services. It’s a warm, refined atmosphere perfect for family gatherings or hosting special guests.
📜 History of "Methavalai Sorndaeng"
This restaurant's history is a truly remarkable one, stretching back over half a century.
* The Origin: The restaurant originally opened as "Sorndaeng" in 1957 (B.E. 2500), meaning it has been serving customers for over 60 years.
* The Transition: Following the Black May events in 1992, the original owner transferred the business to the mother of Chef Jirawut Subkeeree. The restaurant underwent a major renovation and was officially renamed "Methavalai Sorndaeng" in March 1993.
* Legacy: Despite the changes, the commitment to the original, authentic Thai recipes has been consistently maintained, allowing it to become recognized as a staple of royal-style Thai cuisine.

This is one of my favorite restaurants, and I always recommend it to friends, clients, or any foreigners who want to try authentic Thai cuisine. It’s one of the few places that still serves traditional dishes like Kratong Thong, Mee Krob Chao Wang, Moo Krajok, and Por Pia Tod a great starter set that lets you sample a variety of flavors at a very reasonable price.

The ambiance is classic and elegant, almost like stepping back into a Suntaraporn-era Thailand, with live piano music and traditional Thai singers performing classic Luk Krung songs while you enjoy your meal. It adds a nostalgic and sophisticated touch to the dining experience.

Today, I ordered some of my favorite dishes. The Green Curry was a hit, mild enough for foreigners to enjoy while still keeping the authentic Thai flavors. The Gaeng Kua Pu Cha-Om (Crab Curry with Acacia Omelet) was rich and flavorful, and the Tom Kha Gai (Coconut Chicken Soup) was another must-try dish. If you’re looking for something special, the Yam Sam Grob (Three Crispy Flavors Salad) is a standout, offering a perfect balance of sweet, sour, and spicy.

This restaurant is a true gem, perfect for introducing foreign visitors to traditional Thai cuisine in a setting that feels both nostalgic and elegant. Highly recommended! 🎶🍛

We really enjoyed the food and live music. The overall service of the waitresses was great. However, it's quite disappointing that the restaurant couldn't even provide a proper highchair for an infant. We specifically chose a more upscale restaurant thinking they would be able to accommodate our child. Furthermore, they couldn't accept a tap payment by credit card even though their machine was equipped for it. The server handling our payment wasn't quick wittted enough to figure out a solution or call someone to explain. For a restaurant at this price point, those two points should have been easily handled.

This restaurant perfectly captures the charm of the 1950s–1960s — from the decor to the atmosphere, it feels like stepping back in time. The food was absolutely delicious, and the music added to the overall nostalgic vibe.

What really stood out was that the place seemed to be filled mostly with locals — apart from our table, only one other group looked like tourists. It felt like we’d discovered a true local favorite.

They’ve had a few Michelin recommendations, and the food truly lives up to that reputation. Every dish was flavorful and authentic.

If you’re looking for genuine Thai cuisine with a touch of vintage charm, this place is a must-try!

The flavours were amazing and blends so well together within each dish. Ingredients used were fresh too.

While the plating and ambience was not the same as what one would expect of a typical one star Michelin restaurant, the flavours and the warm response of the staff made up for it.

Definitely worth a try!
